An introduction to exploring the underwater world from the surface, perfect for the whole family and a great first step into the water. You’ll learn to use a mask, snorkel and fins efficiently, practice essential surface skills, and develop relaxed, effective breathing so you can move comfortably and conserve energy. Along the way you’ll build the confidence and safe habits that make time in the water enjoyable, whether you’re floating over a shallow reef or watching marine life from above. It’s an ideal springboard toward scuba or freediving, and free online training helps you get started before you even reach the water.

The SDI Snorkeler Course is an introduction to exploring the underwater world from the surface. It’s an ideal first step for anyone who wants to feel more comfortable in the ocean, whether for travel, future scuba or freediving training, or simple enjoyment. You’ll learn how to use your equipment correctly, understand the marine environment, and move through the water with ease, while building safe habits that stay with you.

Dives included: no scuba dives; 1 snorkeling session (minimum 20 minutes).

Prerequisites

• Minimum age 18 years; 4 with parental consent
• Comfortable in the water
• Complete a medical/liability statement
• No prior experience required

What You Will Learn

• Selecting and fitting mask, snorkel, and fins
• Mask clearing and snorkel clearing at the surface
• Efficient finning techniques and relaxed breathing
• Surface dives and equalization
• Buoyancy and energy conservation at the surface
• Basic environmental awareness and buddy procedures

Required Equipment

• Properly fitting mask
• Snorkel
• Fins (full-foot or open-heel with boots)
• Exposure protection (rash guard or wetsuit) as appropriate
• Optional snorkeling vest for added surface buoyancy

• Conducted in confined or open water under professional guidance
• No certification card required to participate; SDI recognition available
