Description
Master finding your way underwater using both natural references, like sand ripples, reef formations, depth contours and the direction of light, and precise compass navigation. You’ll learn to estimate distances, follow accurate headings, run patterns and combine techniques so you always know where you are and where you’re headed. These are among the most practical skills a diver can develop, giving you the confidence to return to favorite spots, locate specific features and reach your ideal exit point without long, tiring surface swims. Good navigation makes every dive smoother, safer and more enjoyable, and it’s a cornerstone skill for more advanced diving.
This course is designed to give students a greater understanding and experience on how to properly navigate underwater using both natural and compass navigation. You will learn how easy and simple navigation can be and how it will help you both above and below the surface. During this course, you will review natural aids such as sand ripples or reef formations, which can accurately predict your route, along with the practical skills and techniques you’ll need to use a compass effectively.
Dives included: 2 open water dives.
Prerequisites
- SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent
- Minimum age 10 (Junior) / 18 (adult)
- Complete a medical statement where relevant
What You Will Learn

Course Requirements & Standards (SDI)
- Minimum of 2 open-water training dives with an SDI Instructor
- Conducted within recreational limits
- Emphasis on practical navigation accuracy
