Description
Not ready to commit to the full Open Water course all at once? This program covers the same subjects and skills with abbreviated in-water training, allowing you to dive under the direct supervision of a dive professional for up to 12 months. It’s an ideal option for travelers who want to get in the water quickly or new divers who prefer to ease into certification at their own pace. You’ll build real, transferable diving skills from the start, and the training you complete counts toward your full certification. Simply complete two more checkout dives anytime within that window to finish your Open Water Scuba Diver certification and dive independently with a buddy.
Dives included: 2 open water dives.
Prerequisites
- Minimum age 18 (Junior Supervised Diver ages 10–17 with adjusted limits)
- Adequate swimming ability and comfort in the water
- Complete a medical statement — physician approval where required
- No prior certification required
What You Will Learn
- Dive theory fundamentals (physics, physiology, environment, equipment)
- Assembly, care, and use of scuba equipment
- Core water skills: mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control
- Controlled ascents and descents
- Buddy procedures and basic dive planning
- Skills required to dive under professional supervision
Required Equipment
- Mask, snorkel, and fins
- Exposure suit suited to the environment
- BCD with low-pressure inflator
- Regulator with alternate air source and SPG
- Weight system, cylinder, and dive computer/depth gauge and timer
Course Requirements & Standards (SDI)
- Same academic content as Open Water Scuba Diver
- Diving limited to direct supervision of an SDI professional
- Certification valid for up to 12 months as a supervised diver
- Maximum training depth generally 18 metres/60 feet
- Upgrades to full Open Water Scuba Diver after two additional open-water dives
After This Course
Complete two more open-water checkout dives within 12 months to earn the full SDI Open Water Scuba Diver certification and dive independently with a buddy.
